Understanding Content Types

How Recall handles URLs, text, images, and files from the iOS share sheet.

By Rouslan Zenetl

iOS share sheets pass four content types to apps. Recall handles each differently.

URLs

The richest type. Recall fetches the page and extracts structured metadata—title, author, dates, thumbnails, and up to 115 additional fields depending on the source. See Deep Dive: URL Captures for the complete taxonomy.

Text

Plain text becomes note content directly. No fetching, no metadata extraction. Fast and lightweight.

Images

Saved as attachments with auto-generated thumbnails. Original preserved in iCloud storage.

Files

PDFs and documents saved as attachments with original filename. Useful for reference material alongside web captures.

Detection is automatic. Share from Safari → URL. Select text and share → text note. Share from Photos → image. The share sheet tells Recall what’s coming.
